FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) – A restaurant in a $3 million strip mall in Franklin caught fire Monday afternoon but was saved by fire sprinklers.
Fire officials said Chopstix, one of 11 businesses in the building at 1441 New Highway 96 West, caught fire inside an indoor commercial smokehouse.
After employees tried to fight the flames with an extinguisher but were unsuccessful, the fire continued to grow.
The automatic sprinklers ultimately went off, extinguishing the fire before firefighters arrived. They also prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring businesses.
Damage was estimated at $50,000, according to Franklin Fire Investigator Lt. Michael Henderson.
Chopstix is closed for repairs, but other businesses in the building are open. There is no word on when it will reopen.

FOX 46 News (WJZY) -- A woman frustrated with long wait times in a North Carolina hospital's emergency room held a lighter to a sprinkler, dousing the entire ER in water.
A police report says "copious amounts of water" flooded the emergency room. The responding officer called the scene "chaotic and disastrous" when he got there, as employees rushed to move patients from the ER to a conference area. The hospital says there was between .5 and 6 inches of water standing in the ER.
Police say Katlyn Milligan, 20, told them she'd been in Carolinas HealthCare System - Blue Ridge in Morganton, NC for at least 1.5 hours, waiting for her mother's girlfriend to be treated for a back problem. Milligan said she grew impatient, so she went to the women's bathroom, turned a trash can upside down, stood on it, and held a lighter to a sprinkler for at least a minute.
Water damage caused ceiling tiles to crumble in the hospital. No word yet on if other people in the ER were seriously impacted by the activated sprinklers.
After the sprinklers went off, doctors admitted Milligan to the ER to check her for exposure to stagnated water from the sprinkler. Once she was discharged, police took her into custody.
Katlyn Milligan was charged with burning personal property, damage to personal property, and molesting a fire extinguishing system. She was arrested, and given a $5,000 secured bond.
Milligan told police she'd been charged in Florida before for making a bomb threat.
We reached out to Milligan for comment. She told FOX 46, “I'm sorry I don't want to be bothered.”
ProPublica did a study on hospitals to compare ER wait times in December 2014. They found most patients at Carolinas HealthCare System - Blue Ridge aren't waiting as long as other patients in other areas of the state or nation. The study says the average wait time in the Blue Ridge ER as of December 1, 2014 was 30 minutes.

The increasing installations of fire sprinkler systems along with, the collaborative efforts of federal custodians and tenants, private sector building owners, Fire Protection Programs (FPPs) within the Labor Program at Human Resources, Skills Development Canada (HRSDC), and local fire service agencies in developed countries are propelling the growth of the fire sprinkler market. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has been working towards globally standardizing the rules for fire protection which reduces the risk and effects associated with fire, thereby encouraging the adoption of fire sprinkler systems. However, as in the case of any advanced technology, these systems also face challenges related to effective design and maintenance but engineers are working towards resolving these issues. Various market players are taking several initiatives to overcome these issues and provide highly effective solutions for end-users.

Widespread ‘smart home’ technology encouraging growth for global fire sprinkler systems market
from companiesandmarkets.com
The safety benefits of installing sprinkler systems into both commercial and residential properties have long been advocated. A well-engineered system will detect fire-level heat one sprinkler at a time; if caught early enough, in most cases the small fire sensed will be easily put out. Credited with reducing deaths and damage to property by up to 65%, it is perhaps no wonder that the global fire sprinkler market is expected to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.36% between 2015 and 2020.
This projected global net worth rise, from $6.47Bn to $11.04Bn, is indicative of the widespread applicability of fire sprinkler worldwide. Sprinklers are necessary for almost every vertical industry, including governmental premises, healthcare, academic institutions, as well as more traditionally fire-vulnerable industries such as oil and gas extraction, mining and transportation, fire-prevention. Methods which incur as little damage as possible are becoming increasingly popular. Fire sprinklers reduce the need for a fire department to visit what may only be a minor incident by responding efficiently; governments are increasingly vocal in their support for widespread installation of sprinkler systems.
The North American market in fire sprinkler systems is currently the largest, valued at around one-third of the overall net worth and retaining some of the biggest players in the fire sprinkler market. Although Europe cuts a close second, it is the Asia-Pacific market which is set to experience the highest increases in market consumption over the forecast period. More problematic weather conditions, increased vulnerability to climate change and rapid urbanisation are just some of the factors underlying this projected hike in fire sprinkler profits.
One of the most integral factors in helping to expand the fire sprinkler market, however, has been the rise in construction of 'smart homes', particularly in North America and Europe. Automated applications installed across smart homes include sensor-based heating systems, efficient energy circuits and appliances which are timed to start when the house is empty. Fire sprinklers, as resource-efficient and less untidy than traditional fire-prevention methods such as blankets, are a welcome addition to many of these 'smart-style' houses. It is hoped that they can save on water bills, as well as reduce the need for a call out by the fire brigade.
Although rates of fire death are relatively low in North America and Europe compared to other areas of the world, including Asia-Pacific, it is hoped the more readily available sprinkler technology as a result of more 'smart homes' will encourage an uptake of these sophisiticated sprinkler systems. Local building codes and governmental policies are also expected to contribute to the projected market rise 2015 - 2020.
