| VICTORVILLE • A man was airlifted to a trauma center following a early-morning second-alarm fire Sunday that destroyed three mobile homes and several vehicles at the Totem Pole Mobile Home Park, San Bernardino County Fire officials said.
“An 11-year-old boy who was visiting family with his father was awoken at about 5 a.m. by the smell of smoke and when he looked outside he saw flames on the front porch,” said Tracey Martinez, spokeswoman for the fire department.
The child’s father sustained burns as he and another man in the mobile home attempted to put out the flames, she said. The burn victim was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.
Brenda Chamberlain, who lives next door to the home that first caught fire, said she was awoken by a bright yellow-orange light. A few moments later, her living room window blew out by the heat coming from the neighboring mobile home. She had just enough time to move her vehicle away from the flames. Her home sustained moderate damage, officials at the scene said.
Firefighters arrived at the mobile home park in the 12700 block of Mariposa Road and found one home already fully engulfed and the fire spreading to nearby vehicles and mobile homes, officials said. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze after about 35 minutes, Martinez said.
The mobile home the juvenile and two men were sleeping in was completely destroyed and two neighboring units, including Chamberlain’s, were severely damaged. Three vehicles were also destroyed, according to Martinez.
The High Desert chapter of the American Red Cross was called upon to help the three families displaced by the fire, officials said.
Fire and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
