Cape Coral’s City Council voted 7-1 tonight to kill an ordinance that would’ve required fire sprinklers in new single-family and duplex homes.
Council members acknowledged requiring sprinklers would likely save lives but that the option to add them should remain a choice, not a mandate.
Councilman Kevin McGrail said residents were more likely to get robbed than fall victim to a fire.
Councilman Chris Chulakes-Leetz, who proposed the ordinance and has crafted it for the past 18 months, asked that council table it until August but council members instead decided to deny the measure.
Several residents spoke against the ordinance, including Nancy Patti, who called it a “Bloomberg,” referring to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
“We don’t need anyone in this city running around saying you can’t have a Big Gulp,” Patti said.
