YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: The sprinkler system at the Route 17 Toys R Us helped keep an overnight fire in a second-floor stockroom from spreading, authorities said early this afternoon.
Store employees were evacuated immediately and no injuries were reported to the 2:30 a.m. two-alarm fire, Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.
“The store’s automatic fire sprinkler system kept the fire contained,” he said.
Several fire and rescue companies responded, with all of Paramus’s fire and rescue stations as well as the Oradell Fire Department, at the scene and backup assistance provided by their colleagues from Fair Lawn, Rochelle Park, Saddle Brook and Washington Township.
Firefighters stretched several hose lines to the second floor and extinguished the fire within a half hour, Ehrenberg said.
They remained on scene until 4:45 a.m.
“The cause of the early morning fire is still under investigation by the Paramus Fire Prevention Unit and Paramus Police Detectives,” the chief said.
Meanwhile, the store remained closed at least until tomorrow.
