A grease fire in a Scottsdale apartment was extinguished by a sprinkler on Monday before firefighters could arrive, officials said.
The outcome is the latest example of city-mandated sprinkler systems at work, according to Scottsdale Fire Capt. Jim Novotny.
A woman was inside the apartment Monday when a fire began on the stove and spread to the cabinets in the 7900 block of East Princess Drive, officials said.
A sprinkler head put out the fire before first-responders arrived at the apartment and treated the woman for minor smoke inhalation. No other apartments or inhabitants were harmed.
Novotny said the incident demonstrates how the city’s sprinkler ordinance has been effective in saving lives and minimizing damage from fires.
In 1985, the Scottsdale‘s city council passed an ordinance requiring every commercial and multi-family building to be outfitted with a complete fire-sprinkler system. The ordinance also requires that single-family residences built after Jan. 1, 1986, be fully outfitted with an approved fire-sprinkler system.
