Automatic fire sprinklers were able to extinguish a fire that erupted over the weekend in Mt. Prospect.
According to fire officials, on Sunday, Mar. 2 at approximately 1:45 a.m., the Mt. Prospect Fire Dept. responded to an activated fire alarm in the building at 1050 S. Elmhurst Rd.
As firefighters entered the building to investigate, they discovered one activated sprinkler head in the rear laundry room area. No one was injured.
The cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature caused by oily towels, which spontaneously combusted, fire officials said.
The automatic sprinkler had extinguished the fire prior to firefighters' arrival.
Crews performed smoke removal and checked for extension of the fire.
The Des Plaines Fire Dept. assisted Mt. Prospect during this incident. Total damage is estimated at $10,000.
Without an automatic fire sprinkler and fire alarm system, the loss to the business could have been much more significant, fire officials said.
