Woman, 60, Killed in Fire at Apartment in Palms Area: LAFD
A 60-year-old woman died in an apartment fire in the Palms area on Friday, marking potentially the 12th such death this year in an apparent increase of deadly residential fires in Los Angeles.
The blaze was reported at 1:54 p.m. in the 3400 block of Clarington Avenue (map), according to Cody Weireter with the Los Angeles Fire Department.
One unit in a two-story apartment complex burned, and it took 40 firefighters 17 minutes to knock the blaze down, Weireter said.
A 60-year-old woman had died in the fire, Weireter said. No other information was immediately available.
Earlier this week, a mother and her 19-month-old son were killed in a fire at a 350 square-foot converted garage in South Los Angeles. Fire officials said their deaths marked the 10th and 11th in a house fire so far this year in L.A.
Typically, the city has about 20 fatalities due to residential fires every year, LAFD officials have said.
