PORTLAND -- The Portland City Council passed a new ordinancerequiring at least 14 night clubs to add fire sprinklers.
Night clubs in old buildings that hold more than 100 people must have them installed by July of 2015.
Many states have enacted similar measures in the wake of a 2003 Rhode Island nightclub fire that killed 100 people, and Portland firefighters have said they fear a similar situation could occur here.
Retrofitting older buildings could cost as much as $20,000, so the proposal would give business owners some time to make the update.
The Oregonian reports that the following 14 nightclubs are affected:
1) Ash Street Saloon, 225 S.W. Ash St.

2) Crush, 1412 S.E. Morrison St.

3) Dante's, 350 W. Burnside St.

4) Dixie Tavern, 32 N.W. Third Ave.

5) Duke's Hometown Bar & Grill, 14601 S.E. Division St.

6) Goodfoot Pub & Lounge, 2845 S.E. Stark St.

7) Holocene, 1001 S.E. Morrison St.

8) Mt Tabor Theatre & Pub, 4811 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd.

9) Silverado Restaurant/Lounge, 310/318 S.W. Third Ave.

10) Star Theater, 13 N.W. Sixth Ave

11) The Crown Room, 205 N.W. Fourth Ave.

12) Thirsty Lion, 71 S.W. Second Ave.

13) Tonic Lounge, 3100 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

14) Twilight Room, 5242 N. Lombard St.
