MASON CITY,IA-At least 39 people were killed in fires last year in Iowa.
Fire officials say that they would like to see zero, but this number is only up slightly from 2010 and less than 2009.
Mason City Fire Chief Bob Platts says fatal fires are rare in north Iowa.
The last two were in 2008.
He says safety devices and education play a big role in that.
Platts says, “The smoke detectors worked well but the next step we are trying to get in sprinklers in the homes. We have them in commercial buildings, but 80 percent of fire deaths happen in homes. So its really a good next move.”
Platts says sprinklers can give you more time to get out of your home in case of a fire.
