Sorority house fire extinguished by sprinkler system

TUCSON - Tucson Fire responded to a fire at the Alpha Phi sorority this afternoon, but the house's sprinkler system had extinguished the flame before firefighters arrived.

At about 4:23 p.m. today, TFD responded to the sorority, located on the University of Arizona campus, after residents called 911 reporting a fire in one of the rooms, according to a news release from TFD.

When firefighters arrived five minutes later, they found the residents waiting outside and a fire alarm sounding. The sprinkler system inside had extinguished the fire, and damage was contained to one room.

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation, TFD officials state.
